FAO Project- 2006
With sponsorship from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of United Nations, an Agricultural project was taken up in two villages namely Daboda and Tirpari, Gurgaon (Haryana) in 2006-07. The Project included analysis of the soil by soil testing, providing seeds suitable to the soil type, establishment of experimental nurseries, set up Net House and Vermi composting units. High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds of fruits and vegetables were distributed to the farmers as part of the Project.
The Lead Farmers selected for doing the demonstration were trained in these activities and were asked to share their experiences with other farmers in the village. The lead farmers were able to encourage more farmers to take the seedlings from them and grow vegetables. The experience at the end of the year was that not only several farmers grew vegetables for the first time in the village, but they were also able to sell them in the market for good prices and earn additional income.
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) helped in training the farmers by lending the services of their scientists. A detailed soil type study was done and the farmers advised on the methods of improving soil-quality. The High Yielding Variety of seeds of seasonal Vegetable & Fruit Plants, were tested for their suitability to the soil type in the lands of the farmers. The farmers were also provided with the necessary tools and equipments required for better farming.
