Women Car Driver Training ( MSIL project) -2014

Keeping in line with AIWEFA’s activities to bring a sustainable approach to human development and advancement of weaker sections , AIWEFA, with an objective to change  gender perceptions , develop the skills and provide economic empowerment , undertook a project of training underprivileged women  in ‘Safe Car Driving’ with support from Maruti Suzuki India Limited.

AIWEFA’s 85th year celebrations started on 5th December 2014, when AIWEFA in partnership with National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) & United Nation’s Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA ), held a launch programme at NIOS campus in Noida to mobilize underprivileged women to be Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) trained safe drivers. On 15th December 2014 an orientation programme for the women to be trained was held at MISL’s ITDR at Sarai Kale Khan, New Delhi.The women were trained in batches at Maruti’s 14 Driving Schools & ITDRs in Delhi / NCR. So far 350  women have been  trained and MSIL has tied up with employment agencies to procure jobs for them.

The following was the eligibility criteria, laid down by MSIL to apply:

Age: 18-35 yrs

Annual Family Income:  < Rs.3 lacs.

Gender: Female

The MSIL driver training programme given to the selected candidates, included:

  • 20 hours on road training , 2.5 hours simulator ,10 hours class room and 1.5 hour internal assessment and 1.5 hours external assessment (Total 35.5 Hrs. ie 36 days)
  • The trainees got an ASDC certificate post successful clearance of the external, assessment
  • The cost of the training (Rs.9000/-per trainee) was borne by MSIL. This includes assessment fee for ASDC
  • MSIL also, provided for the learners license.
  • Any other expense towards stipend, permanent license was to be borne by the candidate.

AIWEFA did the gigantic task of mobilizing and selecting about 350 candidates for the MSIL training over a period of one year ( from Dec.2014 to Nov. 2015) . Mobilization was done through private contacts, Lady Irwin and other colleges and several of our sister NGOs.Today the trained candidates, after acquiring the valuable skill are not only more confident, self reliant and economically empowered but are saving the society by providing  safe cars  especially for women and small children.
