Village Adoption in Gurgaon ( GAIL Project) – 2002-2005

 

In 2002 AIWEFA adopted three villages Daboda, Tirpari and Pataudi in Gurgaon, Haryana for holistic and sustainable area wise development in its “Village Adoption Project”. The programme laid emphasis on literacy development including providing extra support for children to continue education apart from dealing with health issues, hygiene and sanitation, vocational training to girls and women and imparting income generation skills. The programme also emphasised identifying and encouraging local talent in sports and other areas.

The Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) was the sponsor for the project from 2002-2005 while AIWEFA networked with the Government machinery, partner NGOs and other organisations for greater outreach. Some of the activities included:-

A.Education: – It covered:-

1) Basic literacy classes.
2) Computer education.
3) Non-formal education.
4) Private coaching for class 8 and class 10 students in Mathematics and English.

B.Health Care and Medical Facilities:- It covered:-

1) Health Camps.
2) Nutrition Camps.
3) Training Workshops – for Traditional Birth Attendant.

C.Sanitation:

1) Model Toilets were constructed with the technical guidance from Sulabh International. 25 houses were encouraged to build the toilets on their own.

2) After the monsoons, insecticides were sprayed around three hundred households which are associated with the Self Help Groups (SHGs) to reduce mosquito breedings.

D. Income Generation and Vocational Training:

1) Arts and Crafts classes were organised in Pataudi and Daboda and Tirpari.

2) Tailoring classes were held in all the three villages where sewing machines, embroidery machines, and other materials like cloth, threads, black boards were provided. Nearly 80 adolescent girls completed the six month course in tailoring.

3) Beautician Classes in two batches were held at Pataudi.

E.Capacity Development:

1) Workshops for the Trainers and Leaders were held regularly at the AIWEFA office to introduce best practices, impart standardization of training and to strengthen the links with AIWEFA.

2) AIWEFA approached Rural Development & Self – Employment Training Institute (RUDSET) and Vishwa Yuvak Kendra to impart Career Guidance and to hold Training Workshops for Vocational Skills and Youth Entrepreneurship, Youth Groups from the three villages were guided and trained on how to avail of bank loans, run their businesses and market their produce, Several youth were motivated to start their own enterprises.

Programme Highlights:

• Group Leaders were taken on an Exposure visit to Dilli Haat, New Delhi to learn the nuances of display, packaging and pricing.
• SHG members participated in Exhibitions at Delhi on various occasions and sold their wares
