GRC cum SSK Project 2007-2010

 

All India Women’s Education Fund Association (AIWEFA) looked after the Gender Resource Centre at Geeta colony in East Delhi, funded by the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Delhi from 2007 to 2010. Later on it became the Samajik Suvidha Kendra(SSK) with convergence of services from nine Departments of the State Government for the BPL families under the “Mission Convergence” mode. The activities under the GRC are highlighted in the following sections

Information Center

The Government of Delhi had a number of schemes for the welfare of its people. Detailed information regarding these schemes was provided at the Information Centre. The centre could be visited on all working days (Mon – Sat) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm. In addition to this, information could be obtained about

  • Various courses were conducted at the Centre.
  • Banking Information (how to open a Bank account, how to get the loan, how to fill relevant forms etc)
  • Information on various educational and Vocational Courses was available for Career Development.
  • Job Opportunities
  • Nearest Vocational Centre to their residence.
  • Legal Counseling
  • Health Consultancy
  • General Counseling
  • Any other information on demand.

 

Courses Conducted at GRC

Four Courses of 6 month duration twice a year. Each Course had two batches with about 25 students per batch. Classes were held for each batch for duration of two hours everyday, 5 days a week. The age group of beneficiaries was between 18 to 25 years.

Personality development and English Speaking Classes for the students were also organised. Some Life Enrichment Education ( LEE) classes were also arranged in order to help students understand the methods of first aid, causes of AIDS and its prevention and cure, importance of gender equality, impact of population growth, problems of adolescents, importance of public relation skills and basic knowledge of legal aspects useful in everyday life.

On completion of the modules, students were certified by the Jan Shikshan Sansthan and are assisted in getting placements. The syllabus followed is approved by the Jan Shikshan Sansthan. The methodology of training includes:

Computer aided techniques
Field visits
Placement / on the job training

 

Computer Applications

Computer application was one of the most popular of the courses at the Centre. Practical and theoretical knowledge was imparted to the students to enable them to be at par with the changing environment.

The specific objectives of this course were to provide knowledge and skills in:-

  • Computers and their use.
  • Operation of a computer and various operating systems, particularly DOS and WINDOWS.
  • The terminology and concepts used in Microsoft applications.
  • Using and operating the computer independently for word processing, creating documents, tables, charts, pictures, drawing etc.
  • Using computer as a means of communication through internet

 

Beauty Culture and Health Care

Modern trends in the fields of Beauty Culture were kept in mind while training the students enrolled for this course. Make-up, hair setting, bleaching, dyeing, massage, yoga and exercises etc. were a part of this course.

This course has been formulated to provide knowledge and training in:-

  • Creating awareness about personal grooming and health care
  • Types of make up, eyebrow shaping, facials, bleaching etc. manicure and pedicure, hair care, setting, cutting, styling and removal of unwanted hair
  • Hair dye and wigs
  • Henna applications
  • Herbal cosmetology and application
  • Body perfection, massage and yoga exercises
  • Work ethics
Parlour visits were also organised for the students.

Job opportunities that were provided to the beneficiaries include
  • Employment in Beauty parlours/Health Clinics.
  • May be employed as make-up artists for performers in theatre/studios/T.V. studios.
  • Sale promoters for cosmetics and Herbal preparations.
  • Opening of parlor on small scale.
  • Get job work for Bridal make up and Mehandi application.

 

Handicrafts

Some of the trainings given were in the field of Appliqué Work, Diya Painting, Bags, Wall Hanging, Rakhi Making, Folder Making

 

Cutting, Tailoring and Embroidary

Making of varied items like table cloth, mats and other items of home utility are covered under this course. These items are further made attractive by embroidering them and packing them presentably.

 

AIWEFA and SHG Formation

Community survey and mobilization was done on regular basis. Extensive mobilization were done to encourage the residents of the area for SHG formation as well as Non Formal Education. Importance of education in family life, working in cottage industry and working in groups for SHG was stressed upon. Small savings and banking were encouraged. Continuous career counseling sessions are held to enable girls to pursue careers of their interest.

 

Nutrition Camp

A nutrition camp was organised every month at the centre in collaboration with Food and Nutrition Department. Health tips are provided to our beneficiaries. Knowledge regarding nutrition from the food items like sprouts or dals and other easily available sources of proteins and vitamins are discussed and explained to the community members. Cooking food hygienically is discussed and its importance highlighted.

 

Health care

Regular Health checkups were carried on in the Geeta Colony twice a week. A General Physician was available at specified times and advice was given regarding their health and ways of healthy living suggested. Health Camps were a regular feature. These camps were held in collaboration with doctors from Government hospitals. The medicines to be distributed were provided by the Directorate of Health Services, Delhi.
